Grooming is a very important part of taking good care of your horse or pony. A well cared for Pony or horse generally has healthier skin and often a notably shinier coat. By grooming regularely and often you can check for injuries or skin problems and treat them. A well groomed Pony or Horse is less likely to get sores from tack while being ridden. Grooming also stimulates circulation of their blood. Last but not least it is a good reason to spend time with them. |

Hoof Pick Always begin grooming by picking our the Horse or Pony's feet. Using a hoof pick always work from heel to toe of the hoof along the sides of the frog. It is important to do this gently as this is a sensitive area. Always check all four hooves for signs of disease. If the Pony or Horse is shoed check the condition of the shoe and nails also ensure that the shoes are not loose. |

| Banged Tail | Docked Tail | Natural Tail | Plaited Tail | Pulled Tail |
| This is when the tail is trimmed
straight across all hairs the same length
|
This is when the tail is trimmed in a straight line just below the dock. It is common for carriage horses or horses used in driving. | This is when the tail has not been trimmed and just simply brushed and left in it natural shape. |
The hairs of the dock can be
"plaited" or commonly known as "braided" to look neat and tidy for special
occasions. (Although difficult to see in this picture it is where the tail is braided) |
A well groomed and pulled tail adds greatly to the appearance but is more likely to be done with a stabled Horse/Pony. It is not always recommended for one kept at pasture as the tail provides protection and pulling thins the tail. Please refer to your Pony Club manual for further information. |
